Books From the Past

Do you know who this woman is?

You may recognize her in this picture.

Norman Rockwell painted her picture. She is Ruby Bridges the first ‘African-American’ child to integrate the school system in New Orleans. She is originally from Mississippi. There was a children’s book and a movie done about her life called Through my eyes: the Ruby Bridges Story.

Did you know that Bugs Bunny and Peter Rabbit are based on the children’s stories of the Israylites? The slaves told stories of a rabbit called Brer Rabbit who taught the children morals and values and how to out smart the tricksters, brer fox and brer bear. The stories are narrated by a character in the book named Uncle Remus. It is so good to see children are still reading stories that were once told in Africa (see above picture). Oh yeah, brer or br’er means brother, brother rabbit.
